During your first appointment, we will go through your medical history and get a thorough understanding of your current issues and your health goals. We will discuss a treatment plan, answer any questions you may have, then get to work! Acupuncture or cupping (or both) will be performed. We may discuss herbal formulas that would be beneficial to you, if that is something you are interested in.
Acupuncture is generally not painful. Some areas are a little more sensitive than others, but typically the sensation will range from nothing to a mosquito bite. Patients typically retain needles for at least twenty minutes. In this time you are free to nap, meditate, or just try to relax!
Following acupuncture, reactions vary from person to person. Some feel energized, some feel like they could go ahead and get a good night's sleep. Usually they report relaxation, one of the great side effects of acupuncture.
2. What is acupuncture good for?
Everything, kind of. Some of the more common things to be seen for:
There are so many other areas we can work on - if you're wondering, just ask!
3. Why are you looking at my tongue?
In Chinese medicine, there are some methods of diagnosis that you may not be used to. One of these is examining the tongue. We look at the color, shape, and other factors. This can tell us a lot about your condition. We may also feel your pulse in both wrists, again examining the quality of the pulse to learn more about you. At times we may ask questions that may seem unrelated to your main complaint, but it all helps paint the bigger picture. If you're curious about these areas, we'll be glad to discuss them with you.
4. How often should I come?
This depends on what we're working on. Many people find weekly treatments beneficial for overall health and stress reduction. Others do well coming once a month or so for maintenance. For acute issues such as injuries, it can be good to do a few appointments closer together, only coming back in the future for maintenance or if you feel things kicking up again. For chronic issues, regular treatments are recommended. We will discuss what is best for you and make a plan together.
